Be Empowered!

Happy New Year!

I wanted to share this video with everyone. If you haven't seen it yet, it is a cover of the song "Team" by Lorde sung by Rotana Tarabzouni. This beautiful song was a tribute to all of the women who broke the unofficial ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia on October 26th of last year. There is no official law banning them from driving, but getting a license if you're a woman is not an easy task. This keeps women reliant on others to get around.

Imagine not being allowed to drive. Here in the USA, driving is a symbol of freedom and empowerment. On the open road, you control your destiny. Now think of the guts it took for those women to do something as simple as go to the grocery store. All women want and deserve the opportunity to control their destiny (or at least go to the grocery store without their husband whining about it). Our sisters should have our support, after all, we're on each other's team.

So what does any of this have to do with bellydance? Well, there's no official ban on enjoying yourself and dancing, but we sometimes don't give ourselves the license to let go and be free. Take some encouragement and inspiration from our Saudi sisters. Be empowered! Don't let anyone make you forget your freedoms. Drive and dance free.

If you want to know more about the driving campaign here is an interesting article in USA Today. There's also an entire blog devoted to the issue.

I promise the next post will be much more bellydance related (mostly because Julianna or Judith will be writing it)!
